Success at the 2012 Brewers Guild Awards

Three trophies, 2 golds, 3 silvers, and a bronze. That was the swag we walked away with from the 2012 Brewers Guild of New Zealand awards on the 16th of August 2012 with proud ear-to-ear smiles on our faces.

Two of the trophies were won for our beer. Great, but what does it mean to win a trophy? When a beer is entered in a style class it is eligible to win a gold, silver or bronze medal. Unlike most competitive events, multiple medals of each type are given out for each category. For example, seven golds were given out in the category 'British Ale Styles'. This unusual format exists to acknowledge that a beer has been judged to be of a particular standard of quality; as opposed to first, second, or third. Out of the medal winners, only one entry is chosen by the judges to win the trophy. Winning a trophy means your beer was considered to be the best beer in that class.

The first trophy we were awarded on the evening was for our Hefe in the 'Wheat & Other Grain Styles' category, and the second for our Pilsner in the 'International Lager Styles' category. Tuatara owner and brewer Carl Vasta accepted the awards and gave credit where due; namely to fellow Tuatara brewer Mike Neilsen who has been largely responsible for the production of much of our beer since the move to the new brewery. Cheers guys, love your work!

Our third trophy was not for a specific beer, but won for our range of packaging in the awards category, no surprises here; 'Packaging'. Huge thanks to our designers and materials suppliers for creating awesomeness for us.

Many thought that our overall haul put us in good stead to take out the 2012 champion brewery award as we did back in 2008, but this year it was deservedly won by Harrington's (Christchurch) who also held several medals by the end of the evening. Congratulations to Carl & the team at Harrington's for the win. Futher congratulations to all our fellow trophy and medal winners, and thanks to the Brewers Guild, the judges, the sponsors, and the volunteers who all made the awards happen. Find out more about the awards lead-up and evening at the Brewers Guild website. You can also download the full catalogue of results here.

Cheers! Here's to another great year for Tuatara!
